About BuyAHomeIn
Comprehensive, data-driven home buying guides for all 50 US states.
Our Mission
BuyAHomeIn helps first-time and experienced buyers navigate the home buying process state by state. We were founded by real estate researchers who noticed how dramatically the home buying process varies between states — from legal requirements and closing customs to available assistance programs and tax implications.
Our goal is to give every buyer the specific, accurate information they need for the state where they are purchasing. No generic advice. No one-size-fits-all guides. Just detailed, sourced data for your state.
Our Data & Methodology
Every data point on BuyAHomeIn is sourced from publicly available, authoritative datasets. We do not estimate or fabricate numbers. Our data pipeline processes raw source files and validates figures against multiple sources before publishing.
- Zillow Research
Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI), rental data, and market trends for states and 900+ metro areas.
- U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
FHA loan limits by county, updated annually.
- Tax Foundation
Effective property tax rates by state, transfer tax data, and comparative tax analysis.
- State Housing Finance Agencies
First-time home buyer programs, down payment assistance, and eligibility requirements for each state.
- State Real Estate Commissions
Attorney requirements, disclosure laws, foreclosure processes, and other legal requirements.
All data is updated quarterly. Our data pipeline processes raw CSV files from these sources, normalizes formats, and validates figures against multiple references before any data appears on the site.
Our Editorial Process
Every state guide on BuyAHomeIn is researched individually. We do not copy a template and swap in state names — each guide reflects the specific laws, programs, costs, and processes for that state.
- 1.Legal requirements (attorney state vs. non-attorney state, disclosure obligations, foreclosure type) are verified against state real estate commission publications.
- 2.Market data — median home values, appreciation trends, and rental comparisons — is refreshed quarterly from Zillow's public research datasets.
- 3.First-time buyer programs and down payment assistance details are verified against each state's housing finance authority website.
- 4.Closing cost estimates, transfer tax rates, and property tax data are cross-referenced between the Tax Foundation, HUD, and state revenue department publications.
If you find information that is outdated or incorrect, please let us know. We take data accuracy seriously and will investigate and correct any errors promptly.
Why State-by-State?
Real estate is hyperlocal. The process and costs of buying a home vary dramatically from one state to another. A guide that treats all states the same misses critical details that directly affect buyers' decisions and costs.
- —Some states require an attorney at closing; others do not.
- —Foreclosure processes vary between judicial and non-judicial states, affecting timelines and buyer protections.
- —Transfer taxes range from zero in some states to over 2% in others — a difference of thousands of dollars on a typical purchase.
- —Disclosure laws dictate what sellers must reveal about a property, and these requirements differ significantly by state.
- —Every state has its own set of first-time buyer programs with unique eligibility rules, income limits, and benefit structures.
This is why we built BuyAHomeIn as a state-by-state resource rather than a generic national guide. Buyers deserve information specific to where they are purchasing.
